How Do Pregnancy Tests Work?

Pregnancy tests look for a hormone called Human Chorionic Gonadotropin or hCG for short. This is a hormone only produced during pregnancy, and once it has had time to build in the body, a test can detect it and produce a positive result.

There are two types of pregnancy tests:

  • Urine
  • Blood

HCG can be detected in either of these tests, but urine tests are most commonly used generally due to their effectiveness, ease of use, and cost.

When Should I Take a Pregnancy Test?

Taking a pregnancy test on the day of your missed period is best. This allows hCG levels to build and be detected in urine.

It’s not impossible to get a positive result if taken before this time, but you risk a false result when taken too early.

If you believe you may be pregnant, make an appointment today to take our highly accurate pregnancy test, and let us help you get the answers you need!
